Victoria Beckham reveals ADORABLE details about her life

June 8, 2015
Victoria Beckham’s days as a Spice Girl are well behind her. The Essex-born star has well and truly re-invented herself as a respected and much-admired fashion designer and of course a proud wife and mum.
The style icon was the latest designer to join fashion maven Fern Mallis at Manhattan’s 92nd St. Y for a very public conversation on clothes, marriage, and ’90s pop stardom. The questions were candid and so were the answers…and rather than rehash our thoughts on Posh Spice, we’ll let you experience her wit and wisdom yourselves.

A Posh Beginning

In 1974 , Jackie and Anthony Adams, who run an electrical warehouse business, welcome their first child Victoria Caroline. The couple adds daughter, Louise, and a son, Christian to the family. With the success of the business, the Adams provide a comfortable upbringing for their children and drive a Rolls Royce.

Growing Up Posh

“My parents were great parents…they’ve been together for I can’t remember how many years. They’re very happy, and they still sit in front of the TV together and hold hands…. Growing up, my mom was a stay-at-home mom and my dad was an engineer…he was self-made, and he worked so hard. He worked really hard, and it was always his ambition to own a Rolls Royce. He was so proud of that car, but when he used to take us to school in the Rolls, I was just mortified. My siblings and I used to beg him to drop us off down the street, or to use the big van he had for work. “Please, Dad, can we just take the van?” How times have changed! I would much rather ride in a Rolls Royce now!”

Seeing Fame

At seven Adams watches the film Fame, a musical following a group of students through their studies at a New York performing arts school. She realizes she wants to be famous and her parents enroll her in Jason Theatre School in Enfield.

Tackling Teens

As a teen, Adams struggles with acne and unpopularity, but never lets it get in the way of her dreams of superstardom. An ex-chum tells PEOPLE in 1997, “She would ram it down everyone’s throat that she was going to be this great star.” After graduation, 17-year-old Adams goes on to attend Laine Arts Theatre College in the Surrey town of Epsom, studying dance and modeling.

Her Backup Plan

“I was never going to be a model. I studied dance until I was qualified to be a dance teacher. My mom said I had to have something to fall back on if it all went wrong…. So if it does go wrong, I can always be a tap-dancing teacher. Good to know, right?”

The Spice Girls: An Origin Story

“There were thousands of girls that turned up to audition for the group. There were queues around the studio. Everybody sang a pop song…. I sang Mein Herr from [the Broadway musical] Cabaret, which was really not the right thing to do, but it was very dramatic. In the beginning, we were going to be ‘The Spicy Girls,’ but then we realized there was a porn site called the Spicy Girls. That wouldn’t have been good…. ‘Posh’ was given to us by a British teen magazine, but we were already acting like our names. Mel B. really did dress scary, always in leopard print. Emma [Bunton] reallywas ‘Baby,’ she always wore pigtails and those bloody awful platform shoes! But I’m still very close to all of those girls. I’m really proud of what I achieved with them…. We were just five girls who weren’t all that great individually, but together, we were pretty great!… that’s real ‘girl power’: Be who you are, do what you like, and be friends with other girls!”

Her First Date With David

“I was introduced to him after a football match…. What I liked about him right from the start is that when all the other players were getting drunk at the bar, he was with his mom and dad and younger sister. His family was adorable. And family is very important to me, so I respected that…and I do believe in love at first sight. So seeing David like that was great. It was really great.”

Her First Runway Show

“I’d always wanted to do a fashion line, but I wasn’t in a position to do it…at first, I was walking shows [for Roberto Cavalli], which wasn’t great! Before my first show, I rang my mum, really nervous about walking the catwalk.

She said, ‘You’ve been walking for 30 years. If you haven’t gotten it together by now, you never will. Just get on with it!’ I cringe now that I ever did that, but it was great at the time.”

Harper Beckham’s Personal Style

“When I was pregnant with Harper, I was told I was having another boy. I felt so lucky to be pregnant, to be honest. Of course I didn’t care if it was a girl or a boy. But [having a daughter] was a really lovely surprise….

But Harper hasn’t been treated any differently than the boys. We don’t spoil any of our children…and she likes girly things…but she has three older brothers! And they’re all very sporty. So like her brothers, Harper loves soccer. She has her own little football shoes and her own little football shirt. She runs around with her brothers. She’s a little bit of a tomboy.”

Brooklyn Beckham’s After-school Gig

“Brooklyn works at a cafe down the road from our house. He’s been working there for two and a half years. He does the washing up on Saturdays and Sundays. After all, I had jobs when I was younger.

Why should it be any different for him? And it gives him a little bit of cash for when he’s going out with his friends.”

Having It “All”

“Sometimes, I just want to scream and say, ‘I don’t know how any mother can do it all!’ I’m just trying to juggle everything, like every other mom.

I have a good team of people around me who can make sure I’m at the school plays and parents’ meetings, but also have the time to be in the business. I’m not doing anything on my own.”

Advice to Young Designers: Get a Mood Board

“I did collaborations with Rock & Republic and Linda Farrow before [starting the label]. It’s always great to work for somebody else. Learn all you can when someone else is paying the bills. Surround yourself with people you trust. And work hard and dream big. I believe in creative visualization. I have mood boards…. I try to envision success.”

Victoria Beckham x H&M?

“I’d like to collaborate with someone. I’d like to reach more people. I’d like to offer clothes to people who can’t or won’t pay designer prices. I want to make women feel great and empowered even if they can’t buy designer clothes…. When you wear my clothes, you feel sexy. Everyone should have that.”
