The Swedish Royals ! The wedding of the year is fact !

June 14, 2015

“All I am, all I have. Until my last breath I will love you… All I have. All I want is to wake up close to you….. To be allowed to love you for all my days, with everything I have”.

– That was the message that Princess Sofia  of Sweden ,  sent to her beloved husband, through  the words of a  special song  that she wrote and that was performed by a singer during the wedding reception.

Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip, 36,

married Sofia Hellqvist, 30, on Saturday in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm in front of friends and members of the royal family.

The wedding took place on Saturday 13 June at 16:30 in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm Palace. It was the seventh royal wedding held in the Slottskyrkan.

The aristocracy and royalty of Europe gathered in Stockholm on Saturday to witness the wedding of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden to Sofia Hellqvist

Like a modern Cinderella story: Sofia Hellqvist married Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip yesterday , making her a real-life princess. The bride walked down the aisle to an Enya song on the arm of her father.

Her wedding dress featured an illusion V-neckline with long lace sleeves, which was really elegant.

The prince’s close friend Jan-Åke Hansson served as his best man. The Prince’s niece Princess Estelle, his cousin Patrick’s children Anaïs Sommerlath and Chloé Sommerlath and Sofia’s goddaughter Tiara Larsson served as bridesmaids. During the marriage ceremony lead vocals were performed by Salem Al Fakir, David Pagmar and Samuel Ljungblahd.

Sofia wore a wedding dress designed by Ida Sjöstedt. The dress was in three tones of white and was made in crêpe in-silk that doubled with Italian organza. The dress and the train were embellished with couture lace. The veil was made of thin tulle with appliqués of sheer cotton lace. Sofia’s bridal bouquet consisted of roses and myrtle. In keeping with the royal family’s wedding bouquet tradition, the myrtle came from the grounds of Sofiero Castle. The flowers were in shades of cream and coral and were tied together. Carl Philip wore a mess dress dated to 1878.

After the ceremony, thousands of fans greeted the couple outside. They were then driven in a horse-drawn carriage through Stockholm before returning to the palace again for the wedding reception, Reuters reported, quoting the prince as telling the crowd, “It shows Sweden is a warm country with lots of love,”  before kissing his bride, drawing applause.

Who is Princess Sofia of Sweden ?

Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland (born Sofia Kristina Hellqvist on 6 December 1984) is the wife of  Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland. Prior to her marriage, Sofia was a former glamour model and reality televisioncontestant. As a glamour model, Hellqvist won the men’s magazine  Slitz‍ ’s “Miss Slitz” competition in 2004 and was then cast by TV4 and participated in the reality television show Paradise Hotel in 2005.

Hellqvist had been in a relationship with Prince Carl Philip since 2010.  After the initial confirmation of their relationship, it was reported that the Swedish monarchy was “on the defensive”, due to Hellqvist’s history as a semi-nude erotic model and reality show contestant.

Prince Carl Philip’s crown, Prince Karl XIII’s crown, lay on a cushion to the right of the altar while Princess Sofia Albertina’s crown lay on a cushion to the left of the altar. The crowns are part of a tradition, crowns are used in association with a person the occasion is about.

In April 2011, the couple moved in together at a private estate in Djurgården,Sweden. In June 2014, Sofia and Carl Philip announced their plans to marry, on June 13, 2015 at the Royal Palace chapel in Stockholm.

Princess Sofia was born in Täby to a Danish father and Swedish mother, and moved to Älvdalen at the age of six. She has two sisters, Sara and Lina Hellqvist.

At the age of 20, she did a photoshoot for the men’s magazine Slitz in which she posed wearing only a bikini bottom and a live boa constrictor around her upper body. She was later voted Miss Slitz 2004 by readers.  When the relationship between Hellqvist and Prince Carl Philip was revealed in 2010, Expressen newspaper published the photos again.

Following the Miss Slitz 2004 vote, Hellqvist was cast and offered a spot on the reality show Paradise Hotelwhich was broadcast on TV4.  Hellqvist accepted and made it to the final.  During her stay at the show, she had a much-publicized feud with fellow contestant Olinda Castielle.  In the end, Hellqvist got the opportunity to vote one fellow contestant off the show and decided to cast her vote on Castielle.

In 2005  she moved to New York to study accounting with computer application, specialising in business development, at the Institute of English and Business. She has also studied various courses such as global ethics, child and youth science, children’s communication and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in theory and in Swedish practice at Stockholm University. Hellqvist also started her own yoga centre in Manhattan.

She returned to Sweden to study in Stockholm, where she also worked part-time as a waitress and glamour model.

In 2010, Hellqvist and a friend founded the Project Playground charity to assist underprivileged children in South Africa.

In July 2010, Royal Court spokesperson Nina Eldh confirmed the relationship between Hellqvist and Prince Carl Philip in a statement released by the palace.

The UK Daily Telegraph described the news as putting the Swedish monarchy “on the defensive”, due to Hellqvist’s history as a semi-nude model and reality televisioncontestant.

In April 2011, the couple moved in together at a private estate inDjurgården, Sweden  In June of the same year, the palace confirmed that the couple was living together in Djurgården.

After the wedding, the bride and groom rode a horse and carriage, leading a cortège from Stockholm Palace along its outer courtyard, through the streets of Slottsbacken, Skeppsbron, Slottskajen, Norrbro, Regeringsgatan, Hamngatan, Nybroplan, Nybrokajen, Hovslagargatan, Södra Blasieholmshamnen, Strömbron and finally arriving at the Logården of Drottningholm Palace. The Armed Forces paraded along the procession route and after arriving at Logården, they gave the couple a 21-gun salute. On the balcony of the palace, Carl Philip gave a short speech to the assembled crowd of well-wishers, asserting that “Sweden is a warm country.”The King then “led the crowd in a traditional Swedish ‘four cheers’ for the couple”.

On 27 June 2014, it was announced that Hellqvist and Prince Carl Philip were engaged. In December 2014, Hellqvist made her debut at the  Nobel Banquet in the Blue Hall along with her future husband and in May 2015, it was announced she would receive the title of princess.  They married on 13 June 2015 in Stockholm.

The festivities continued with dinner in the White Sea Ballroom of  Stockholm Palace and dancing in Karl XI’s Gallery. Fredrik Eriksson, Mathias Dahlgren, Mark Aujalay, Henrik Norström and Mattias Ljungberg were responsible for the wedding dinner. At the wedding banquet, King Carl Gustaf welcomed guests and toasted the couple. Swedish musicians Avicii and Icona Pop performed at the wedding reception.

The ceremony featured classical music as well as a significant amount of popular music. The bride walked down the aisle to an instrumental version of Enya‘s “Athair ar Neamh”. The hymns “Guds kärlek är som stranden” and “I denna ljuva sommartid” were played on the church organ and sung by the choir and guests. Al Fakir performed “Fix You” by Coldplay. A Swedish version of “Umbrella“, called “Paraply”, was performed by David Pagmar. The couple exited the church to a rendition of “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” led by gospel vocalist Samuel Ljungblahd. The hymn contained an interpolation of Janet Jackson‘s “What Have You Done For Me Lately“, like the version performed in the film Sister Act 2.
