That, however, must be the result of really good writing, because there’s just no way they could have captured the essence of such basicness if it wasn’t on purpose.

Firstly who is Emily ?

She’s an American girl , probably in her  22-ish. She’s had enough experience at her company in Chicago to have earned the respect of her boss. She’s a smart cookie and really innovative – and this is not her first rodeo doing what she does. She’s gone to school for this, and she’s completed internships. However, she’s not the person who travelled during college. She was really, really focused on her jobs in the Midwest, and I don’t think she’s been abroad. Basically, she’s always kind of been a big fish in a small pond – and then suddenly in Paris she’s a fish out of water. If she had gone to a different company in Chicago, she would have been taken seriously – but in Paris, she’s not prepared for the cultural shift that she experiences at Savoir. Her only real experience of Europe is through movies and TV.”

How could be a dream day in Paris

‘Wake up late and go and take a leisurely lunch outside, so you can just watch Paris go by. Then  clubbing hop around  the city at night,  roaming as many of the major clubs as anyone could in one evening. Paris is a beautiful city in the day, but  it will always come alive by night.’

Your favourite restaurant in Paris?

‘Head for brunch at Les Bains. It was a nightclub until 2011 and in the 1980s and 1990s it was the most famous nightclub in Paris. If anyone can be lucky enough , it is common to see  everybody there, from David Bowie to The Rolling Stones party. The city shut it down, but it’s reopened as a hotel with the club now in the basement. They know their clientele – they serve breakfast until late in the afternoon – then after some food you should be ready to party again!’

Favourite neighbourhood?

‘The Latin Quarter has become so much more popular with visitors in recent years but it still retains so much authenticity and history. There are so many independent cafes and shops there – it’s a wonderful place.’

Where would you recommend for your friends to stay?

‘It’s impossible for anyone to pick one. Rex Club, Le Queen, Les Bains: are all essential clubs in Paris, which people who like to party should check out.’

Where would you go to party?

‘Le Queen is a Paris institution when it comes to clubbing – it’s busy anytime – but  New Year’s Eve is crazy – and it’s home to some very talented DJs. It’s as close to the golden 1990s clubbing as you’re going to get.’

Where would you recommend for shopping in Paris?

‘The Champs-Élysées – it will always be The Champs-Élysées – but it is full of the big brands that you can get in all major cities. In the Latin Quarter you can find such cool, one-off items – and the area is a dream for book and art lovers.’

Where do you go for the best views of the city?

‘Go and stand on a bridge and just enjoy the Eiffel Tower  at night – it’s beautiful. Of course, it is not even close to being among the tallest buildings in the world anymore, but you can’t replicate the romance of it.  I think the place has special memories for anyone have visited even once…’

1. TRACK DOWN A SECRET RESTAURANT

You would hope for something a little off-the-wall from the owners of Sketch. Well, Derrière is on the other side of that wall, through a maddeningly hard-to-find (how Parisian!) unmarked entrance on Rue des Gravilliers.

The entrance opens into a courtyard, and a fabulous apartment. You can eat and drink wherever you like – in the salon, the dining room, the garden, even the bedroom. The food is typically home-cooked, the menu simple and uncomplicated: homemade terrines, beef bourguignon, dark-chocolate mousse. 2. TAKE A DIP IN AN ART DECO LANDMARK

It should come as no surprise that swimming pools in Paris are hard to find. Either they are dark places in basements, or rooftop pools no bigger than a bath. Piscine Molitor is the exception. And what an exceptional pool it is! It was built in 1929, designed to look like an ocean liner in grand Art Deco style, by Lucien Pollet. It was where the bright young things of Hemingway’s Paris came to swim, and where the first bikini was unveiled; and in 2014 it reopened as a hotel. 3. BE THRILLED BY A MODERN-DAY MOULIN ROUGE

More bottoms! Well, this is Paris. The Moulin Rouge cabaret may still exist today, but for a less touristy show, settle into a booth at Le Crazy Horse. Since curtain-up in 1951 it has been the city’s most infamous and spectacular all-female stage show. Lights! Girls! Music! And lots and lots of perfect bottoms! A 1964 lighthouse-steamer, the MV Fingal, will dock next to Queen Elizabeth II’s Royal Yacht Brittania, which lives in Edinburgh. The ship has been retrofitted to become a hotel with 23 rooms and duplex apartments designed in an Art Deco-meets-maritime style. The floating property invites guests to escape into the glamorous past of sea travel.

The luxury floating hotel will be unveiled by The Royal Yacht Enterprises. The MV Fingalis a former Northern Lighthouse Board tender that was the last ship to be built by the Blythswood Shipbuilding Company in Glasgow; it’s now being converted into hotel , built by the Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson.

Interiors by Alan Pedley and Stephen Flanagan combine Art Deco touches with maritime heritage (and the color palette is said to take its inspiration from “the Fingal’s journey—from land and sea to the stunning landscapes of Scotland.” Top digs: the Skerryvore Suite, encompassing 575 square feet. There are also two luxury duplex cabins.

The fall is a lovely time to visit Venice, but it is also when the acqua alta (flooding, or literally “high water”) is more likely to occur. October through January is the typical high water season, though flooding can occur at any time during the year. While high water can definitely hamper your sightseeing, know that it has been a way of life for Venetians for hundreds of years and is a unique experience to have as a tourist.

The entire hotel has only recently undergone restoration, in which all the paintings and sculptures of the hotel were restored and rejuvenated. They also installed a lovely spa called Acqua di Parma spa in case you need a little rejuvenation.

The interiors of the hotel are grand, to say the least. They feature Murano chandeliers, and all the walls of the hotel are adorned with beautiful classical pieces of art.

Even though the bathrooms are relatively small in size, they’re still well designed and marble clad. There’s not a touch of contemporary here. It’s all a paean to a romanticized past.

This is a luxurious five star hotel on the waterfront of Venice. It is located on the Riva degli Schiavoni, from which you can also go to St Mark’s Square via a short and brief gondola ride. Because this is such a prime tourist location, it’s often quite heavy on traffic and noise, however if you want a little more peace, you can set off into the side streets of Castello.

The hotel comprises three buildings — the Palazzo Dandolo, the Excelsior, and Casa Nuovo. While Palazzo Dandolo is a 14th century structure, and thus quite ancient in quality, the other buildings are considerably modern.

The reception area is always crowded, however the lounge area is well decorated with a truly lovely ceiling. Overall there are 210 rooms in the hotel, of 13 different types, and many of them look out at the lagoon.

The rooms of the hotel are regally decked up with thick intricate lacquered furnitures, Murano chandeliers on the ceilings, and damask curtains.

It features a rooftop restaurant by the name of Terrazza Danieli which offers one of the most gorgeous and unhindered sights of the city around.

If you stay at the Casa Nuova part of the hotel then you’ll be met with a contrasting and more minimalist aesthetic of creamy wallpapers and pastel shades all around. As such, you can decide for yourself the kind of vibe you’d prefer.

It connects the Champs-Élysées quarter with those of the Invalides and Eiffel Tower. The bridge is widely regarded as the most ornate, extravagant bridge in the city.  It is classified as a French Monument historique.

The construction of the bridge is a marvel of 19th century engineering, consisting of a 6 metres (20 ft) high single span steel arch. The design, by the architects Joseph Cassien-Bernard  and Gaston Cousin, was constrained by the need to keep the bridge from obscuring the view of the Champs-Élysées or the Invalides.

Four Seasons George V Paris

The Paris Four Seasons hotel was originally established in 1928 to honor George V. Originally, the hotel bore a distinctly Art Deco aesthetic, though recent renovations favored a more modernist look.

It is perhaps the most extravagant and opulent hotel in all of Paris, with the appearance and visage of a Palace, vast sprawled out hallways and rooms, and gastronomic food that simply doesn’t cease to delight the senses.

It also features some of the most charming flower displays and arrangements made by the hotel’s Florist.

It’s located amidst the golden triangle of Paris, snug between the Champs-Elysées and Alma-Marceau. This entire neighborhood is always buzzing with high art, culture, and life. The hotel is also much revered in the city because of its rich history and heritage.

As already mentioned, it was created in an Art Deco style, however over the years they’ve been auctioned off to go for a a pared down look. Now one can only see echoes of its past, though sometimes that is enough.

Even the simplest of the rooms are all luxurious. Some of the rooms feature heavy patterned wallpapers with densely patterned bedspreads, however most of the rooms are minimalist in aesthetic.

Hotel Ritz Paris

Perhaps one of the most convenient aspects of staying at the Hotel Ritz is the fact that it’s located close to eight different metro stations that can take you wherever you want in Paris.

As such, you couldn’t find a hotel better connected than this. The only slight hiccup is that it comes with a pretty expensive price tag. The hotel has been designed in a luxurious 18th-century Parisian style, and is just walking distance from attractions such as Place Vendôme and the Palais Garnier.

The rooms in this hotel are actually called apartments, which is just one of many efforts the hotel takes to make them feel more homely to the visitors. These rooms come in neutral tones and shades, though they have a spattering of gold embellishments.

The Prestige Suites of the hotel all bear a distinct personality, as they overlook specific landmarks of Paris. You can even check yourself into the Suite Coco Chanel, which has been named after their most famous guest and is designed in the visage of her most popular designs.

If you’re in the mood for a drink, you can go over to the Bar Hemingway, or you can grab a meal at L’Espadon. In fact, the hotel also offers a complementary cooking class in case you’re interested!

The Peninsula Paris

This is a typically extravagant and luxurious boutique five star hotel, made in a Parisian style but with modern amenities such as complementary WiFi, large screen LED TVs, etc. The suites are a pleasantly strange hybrid of traditional details rendered in a modernist style. The bathrooms feature marble flooring, with dark wooden cabinets and fixtures.

If you’re into a bit of history, this is the hotel where the Paris Peace Accords were signed, thus putting an end to the Vietnam War. It is also quite well connected with a metro station close by, and sites such as Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe just walking distance away.

To top it off, all guests can avail of up to three hours of complementary chauffeur service to take them around Paris. After a long and tedious day exploring the city, you can return to their charming restaurants — LiLi, or L’Oiseau Blanc.

The former of these gives you a taste of lovely Cantonese dishes, whereas the other features traditional Parisian dishes along with a stunning view of the Eiffel Tower.

Hotel Plaza Athenee

Hotel Plaza Athenee is legitimately what Parisian dreams are made of. It is a luxurious and charming hotel with ornate chandeliers hanging over dining halls, tinkling ever so gently against the wind, and courtyards covered in a variety of foliage and flora.

The lobby of the hotel features some ornate flower decorations atop silver conical surfaces. The hotel also features a lovely courtyard that is converted into a winter rollerskating wonderland.

As for the rooms, some of them are designed completely in neutral beige and yellow shades,

whereas others feature a heavy palette with a lot of purples and chromatic shades.

Other than the classy and charming aesthetic, the hotel also features 5 brilliant restaurants, the most popular one being Le Relais Plaza,

which has been inspired and fashioned along the lines of Paris circa 1920s. The hotel also offers concierge and chauffeur service, but because of the hotel’s prime location transportation is hardly necessary.

It is merely a few minutes walk from Eiffel Tower, Champs-Élysées and the Louvre. In addition to being a location perfect for tourists, the hotel is also located in a place that’s full of stores by big names like Armani, Dior, Chanel, and Vuitton.

Hotel Le Bristol

This hotel was established back in 1925, and it thankfully prioritizes heritage and aesthetic over contemporary designs. It is also famous for having hosted such celebrities as Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe.

It’s also the home to a rooftop swimming pool from which you can look over the entire city lit up at night.

You can also go and get yourself a nice spa therapy if you’re stressed, and if you have children you can drop them off to play at the kid’s club. The five star hotel is built with a grand and luxurious limestone facade which overlooks the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

The interiors of the hotel and the rooms feature a light pink aesthetic which imbues the boutique hotel with a vibrant aura. As such the general aura of the hotel is definitely feminine, and they even use upholstery in some rooms that is a blend of deep green and pink.

In fact, Le Bristol is one of six hotels in all of Paris which has been afforded the status of ‘Palace’ which is a step above five star status. The crowning glory of this hotel is its 3 Michelin starred restaurant named Epicure, which mostly features french and Parisian dishes.

Shangri-La Hotel Paris

This luxury five star hotel is located so close to the bank of the river Seine that you feel like you can almost reach out and touch it. When you look out the window, you can see the Eiffel Tower standing tall in all its glory.

A true pleasure for a sybarite, this hotel gives you a glimpse into the aristocratic and elitist past of France with its over-indulgence in luxury and sensory overload.

The hotel features a wedding-cake shaped facade, and several salons that have been recreated into what they looked like in the days gone by. The work and effort clearly shows as the minutest of details have been taken care of.

Clare Waight Keller  spent her summer travelling through the archives of  Givenchy,  the house she  joined in May , after leaving  Chloe’. Her discoveries brought her to Jonchet, an 18th Century chateau in the Loire Valley where Count Hubert de Givenchy, now 90, received her. “He’s so chic. So tall,” the designer swooned during a preview of her debut collection for the house founded by Givenchy in 1952. The father of the little black dress, he is forever associated with the modern sophistication of Audrey Hepburn, who was his closest friend. Her films were still playing on TV when Waight Keller was growing up in Birmingham in the Seventies, forming her first ideas of the timeless elegance epitomised by Givenchy.

At Chateau de Jonchet, she recognised exotic elements she’d seen in his archives not popularly linked to the legacy of Givenchy. “In a super chic way, there was the tiger, the zebra, the leopard,” she recalled. “It’s not a territory that’s that known but you look through the archive and there’s tons of it. You think about the little black dress, but I talked to him about colour because I wanted to be quite graphic with what I was doing here.”

Tweeds, mohairs, and wools come in shades of russet, ocher, bordeaux, and brown for the Fall‑Winter 2017/18 Haute Couture collection. “Feathers treated like fur” appear on shoulders, dress necklines, and the pockets of the suits created by Karl Lagerfeld.

Karl Lagerfeld chose the 1926 oil painting of La Tour Eiffel by Robert Delaunay for the show invitation, deeming it “a symbol of avant-garde modernity”. Chanel’s website drew attention to Roland Barthes’ observation in “The Eiffel Tower And Other Mythologies”, that Maupassant often lunched in the Eiffel Tower restaurant, even though he didn’t think much of the food, because it was the only place in Paris where he didn’t have to see it.

“Whatever the season, through mist and cloud, on overcast days or in sunshine, in rain – wherever you are, whatever the landscape of roofs, domes, or branches separating you from it, the Tower is there,” Barthes wrote.

Classic twists ruled the runways, teased into delicate patisserie-style swirls by Sam McKnight and held in place with gallons of hairspray.

Evening gowns in gathered or draped satin, with shoulders bare or trimmed with feathers, are worn with matching boaters.

Classic black gave way to chain-trimmed tweed, patent leather and jazzy sequin-embroidered styles, all worn with golf-ball-size pearl earrings.

Shelve the suede: models wore knee-high and ankle-length patent boots in black, cream and beige, adding an edge to the fripperies of razor-sliced tulle, feathers and tweed. Patent always looks slicker.

Karl  Lagerfeld Was Honoured

The famed creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, wass presented with a Grand Vermeil medal by the Mayor of Paris for his contribution to the fashion industry.

EVEN a stifling 30-degree heatwave inside the glass atrium of the Grand Palais could not wilt the glamour conjured within.

Born in 1933, Karl Lagerfeld has not lost the instinctual flare required at Chanel to seamlessly marry the new with storied tradition.

So too with the collection, where signature marks of the brand were given gentle tweaks to bring them up to date. With couture any one piece can cost upwards of five figures.

This is a collection serving an elite crowd, who do not see these investments as one season wonders. Below an almost life-size replica of the Eiffel Tower the show began with a series of classic tweed suits in warm shades of charcoal and peat, mirroring Coco Chanel’s first boucle wool creations, introduced a decade before Lagerfeld’s birth.

This season the jackets came over-sized with voluminous sleeves and capacious proportions and longer skirts. While cropped jackets were married with flared skirts or worn over wool minis, ankle-skimming tunics came with cute hoods and all paired with black buttoned, perspex-heeled ankle boots, a boucle boater and dramatic rainbow striped eye make-up.

Chanel can afford to shrug off the pomp, such is the mastery of its couture ateliers that you know each and every LBD that shimmied past was fashioned with exquisite, painstaking care.

Not that this collection was without a few showstoppers. One gown dripped with delicate chains of jade jewels, while a full silk skirt flounced provocatively beneath. And another inky black creation swept past in majestic grandeur, pulling a lengthy train behind, feathered rosettes pinned delicately to the hem.

Other silk and tulle dresses and tweed tunics bristled with plumes of brightly-coloured feathers, as fanciful as a pheasant in its autumn finery. The very same birds Coco would have witnessed on her many trips to Scotland when staying with the Duke of Westminster.

Couture and the lifestyle that accompanies it may only be available to the global super-rich but it still provides a lifeline of fantasy for the rest of us.
