His color palette spoke to the brand's favored neutrals: black, camel, gray. Think of it as the triumvirate of luxury. But also injected were oxblood, gold, silver and military green for good measure—all used everything from printed furs to cashmere.

Kors' runway also promoted diversity. Diversity of texture (fur, sequins, cashmere, leather, fringe!) and silhouette (slinky, cocoon, fitted, tailored, high-waisted), but also models. There were girls of every color and creed, size and age. Well, relatively on the age.

Isabelle Huppert and Emma Stone, two reddish brunettes, could pull off the darker romantic tones that were sent out. But Stone, in her 20s, might favor the more lavish ballgown types while Huppert, in her 60s might not need the drama of a gown. Perhaps the black columns with gold or silver florals for her. And it would be nice to see Nicole Kidman, with that height and hair, wear the gunmetal sequined dress with the plunging neckline.

The sheer dresses with fur and feathers feel like the right speed for the gamine actresses like Michelle Williams and Naomi Harris. Harris could probably pull off just about any of these dresses, if we're being honest. Beaded olive, dripping in delicate beaded embroidery, would be just the thing for Octavia Spencer.

Gabriela Hearst has quietly built an understated yet strong and loyal (and quite large) fanbase in just a few seasons. Women respond to her clothes, which can be described much the same way: understated, strong, etc. Fall was right in step, adding in vibrant color.

In other words, Burch joined rank with other designers this season, but explored feminism on her terms, by showing a confident woman with a love of the outdoors—with a nod to the preppy style of Burch’s hometown of Philly. Winter whites and shearlings.

The Olsens put to rest long ago any whispers of The Row being a flash in the celebrity designer pan. And fall was a continuing education in their brand's trajectory, especially as they embraced bolder color for the first time with a single red puff coat and skirt.

As loose and louche as Monse was, Oscar was structured, corseted and ultra refined. The pair must have looked to the archives to the hyper-feminine clothing the house namesake was known for when New York's socialites and the world's glitterati fell hard for his charm. Jacquard, silk, double-faced wool, shantung, sequins, cashmere were all  worked into shapes and silhouettes that pulled from a more refined time.

And the grande dames can dream again of waltzing into a black tie in ODLR. For the grander among them, the fur-skirted dresses. For the more subtle, the strapless velvet edged in silver beads. And for those not quite of age to be "grande", some smoking and tuxedo looks.

Phillip Lim has been talking about romancing reality for a while now. It's like a personal and brand mantra. And why not make the everyday just a little bit sweeter? Showing on the eve of Valentine's Day certainly gets you in the mood, and a warm-colored set and set of clothes to pick up on those pinky-red tones is the perfect bow on the chocolate box. Especially if it comes via a plush pink car coat and some pink unstructured, high-waisted suits.

For industry people who don't go to Europe and plain old New York-based fans who manage to score a ticket, this was a bittersweet Proenza Schouler show. This will be Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez's last in New York City as the duo packs up to show combined pre-season and runway collections in Paris during Couture Week (for more, click here). As a final chapter to their New York story, they paid homage to the style, pace and energy of the city—and the women here who have embraced them.

It took a while for color to kick in, but when it did, it showed up via bright blue, rich red and pale pinks and metallics. Tone-on-tone looks served to showcase the quality of textures, especially in Herrera's knits.

But he renewed the brand's focus on accessories—the real breadwinner in good financial times and bad. And it was a smorgasbord: big, little, boxy, tote, hobo, bhalf-moon, monotone, multi-colored, mixed media, studded, leather, calf, snake, accented with silk scarves, cute keychains or little pouches. The pointy-toed booties were just as festive and diverse. Rounded, architectural earrings spoke to the circular paillettes and bag shapes. This was Saunders connecting his dots.

 Three seasons in and Jonathan Saunders is proving to have a deft hand at grasping the DVF mindset—strong, confident, color- and print-loving—while also gently but assertively inserting his own point of view. That is, a keen sense of when to let the colors and prints fly and when to rein them in.

The presentation format is the perfect vehicle to for the new age at DVF. The clothes can be seen up close to appreciate the craft of Saunders, but von Furstenberg herself —who has taken a step back to focus on her numerous other endeavors, most importantly philanthropic — is on hand to charm, woo and delight the masses as always.

Joseph Altuzarra loves a muse. But where his past inspirations have been fictitious women of the big screen, his fall collection went back to the stylized portraiture of the Renaissance era. As he explained it, this was a time when painters stopped sugar-coating their subjects and started showing a little more realism—imperfections, quirks, tics, the stuff that makes a person interesting. (Interesting to note that air-brushing is not a new concept.) To wit, the girls and clothes Altuzarra presented still had that air of cool sexiness, but it wasn't overt and obvious as it has been in the past.

This Fall season is already showing a predilection for color, but it's territory still-relative newcomer Sies Marjan has mined from day one. The show took place in a virtual jewel box of room in Tiffany blue with glittering chandeliers, an ironic contrast to the businesslike professionalism to the Hilton its nestled in. Sies plays with romantic hues just like that, taking baby blue and rose colored track pants to cool girl places.

Designing evening wear is a herculean feat. For one, women don't exactly buy it like they used to (and borrowing businesses like Armarium and Rent-the-Runway are offering a budget-friendly alternative). Not to mention, the overhead is killer—the time creating and the price of materials. Which is why someone like Elizabeth Kennedy and her tenacious dedication to the craft of hand-made evening wear is so important. Oh, and she's American. While a collection is technically not couture until it's invited to show in Paris by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, Kennedy is committed to designing and making her clothes in New York City's Garment District — so let's celebrate that.

Victoria Beckham isn't your average everyday Mary. A former megawatt pop icon, married to a megawatt soccer legend, mother to a burgeoning megawatt social media star -- and there are still three more little stars in training at home. And yet for all that, her collection taps into that everyday concept (albeit a very luxurious one), one that's way more approachable than a red carpet one. Fall's collection directly addressed this grounded woman, her notes saying, "These are clothes for reality, and a real woman's life."

If you'd never met Alexander Wang, followed his unofficial Instagram (full of hilarious, off-kilter internet jokes and videos) or heard him in a live interview, you'd think he must be one serious malcontent, ready to bring down the establishment with every romper stomper boot, skintight leather pant and angry message t-shirt. But most people who have met, seen or heard Wang will use "sweet, funny" even "cute and gentle" to describe him. So what's up with all the tough? The guy just likes his club kid m.o. And girls (and guys) love him for it.

Western-style fringe (in black, of course) detailed blackened chore jackets, overcoats and moto styles, while the wrap button-down shirts from spring morphed into strappy silk tops and skirts for going out this fall.

Jonathan Simkhai has always liked his girls just a little bit naughty. Not that naughty. They're still good girls, but their brand of "nice" comes with lace-up details, lots of ruffles and bits of skin visible in all the teensy laser cuts of his precision tailoring. His fall collection hinted at viewing the divine from a different angle. But interpretation is in the eye of the beholder: A cathedral's intricate architecture and artwork reworked in the scaffolding of Simkhai's dresses or maybe he's saying there's more than one side to every woman.

Simkhai seems to be appropriately ambitious and ready to challenge himself even more, best seen in the highly-decorative jackets and dresses towards the end of the runway. One felt he was going for the kind of drama and execution you'd expect on Europe's biggest runways.

Smilovic kept her shapes and silhouettes roomy and long, but not frumpy. A pair of shiny turtleneck dresses clung, hung and swung saucily, and were paired with matching leggings and velvet pumps. The color combo of green dress and shocking pink pump was especially fun. But interesting color play is also a Tibi signature.

A strong shouldered subdued take on an '80s shoulder was a standout on a cherry red knitted maxi dress. This collection is chic comfort at its best.

The mantra was printed on the back of the classic, slightly boot-cut jeans, actually.
