In memory of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, 10 June 1921– 9 April 2021)

It was with great sorrow that we heard the news yesterday afternoon of the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, born Prince of Greece and Denmark.. Yesterday the world lost a great man. Great-Britain lost a patriot, the Commonwealth lost a servent, the royal family lost its husband and father and Greece lost a great Prince.

Steadfast and loyal he served the Crown with selfless devotion and leaves behind an amazing legacy. He will be missed.

His Royal Highness passed away peacefully yesterday morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.

Philip was born into the Greek and Danish royal families. He was born in Mon Repos Palace in Corfu Greece, on 10 June 1921, the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.

A member of the House of Glücksburg, the ruling house of Denmark, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from George I of Greece and Christian IX of Denmark, and he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones.

Philip’s four elder sisters were Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie, and Sophie. He was baptised in the Greek Orthodox rite at St. George’s Church in the Old Fortress in Corfu.

Unfortunately his family was exiled from the country when he was eighteen months old. After being educated in France, Germany and the United Kingdom, he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939, aged 18. From July 1939, he began corresponding with the thirteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth, whom he had first met in 1934. During the Second World War he served with distinction in the Mediterranean and Pacific Fleets.

After the war, Philip was granted permission by George VI to marry Elizabeth. Before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, he abandoned his Greek and Danish titles and styles, became a naturalised British subject, and adopted his maternal grandparents’ surname Mountbatten. He married Elizabeth on 20 November 1947. Just before the wedding, he was granted the style His Royal Highness and created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich by King George VI. Philip left active military service when Elizabeth became queen in 1952, having reached the rank of commander, and was made a British prince in 1957.

Philip had four children with Elizabeth: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Through a British Order in Council issued in 1960, descendants of the couple not bearing royal styles and titles can use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, which has also been used by some members of the royal family who do hold titles, such as Anne, Andrew and Edward.

A sports enthusiast, Philip helped develop the equestrian event of carriage driving. He was a patron, president or member of over 780 organisations, and he served as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a self-improvement program for young people aged 14 to 24.

He was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. He retired from his royal duties on 2 August 2017, aged 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements and 5,493 speeches since 1952. Philip died on 9 April 2021, two months before his 100th birthday.

With deep sadness, but with the joy of reflecting upon a life lived through outstanding dedication and devotion to his country, family and, of course, to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, my family and I remember HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in Mon Repos, our home on the Island of Corfu, on 10th June 1921, the only son of Prince Andrew (Andreas) and Princess Alice of Greece.

Uncle Philip, as he was known to us, has been a very loved member of the extended Greek family and of course a strong connection for us to Britain where my brother Philippos was born and given his name by my parents. As I reflect on his life, I feel immensely proud of him: of his bravery in World War II and of the way he overcame the challenges of exile in his formative early life. He was by any conceivable standard, the most remarkable servant to the Sovereign and to the United Kingdom, his adopted country, and to the Commonwealth. He was armed with the determination, compassion, vision and steadfast loyalty which were at the core of his ability to support the Queen in their united stability amidst the shifting tides of the past century and beyond. At the coronation he swore to be his wife’s “liege man of life and limb”, which he carried out unfalteringly, unquestioningly.

He will be remembered by over 700 organisations as President or Patron and for the Duke of Edinburgh Award that since 1956 has had 8million young participants. He took great pleasure in his relationship with the Armed forces and the life of the men and women serving them.
Prince Philip did not like to dwell on things: he was a doer, with great vigour and energy. It has been said that the life of the dead is placed into the memory of the living and this will be compellingly true of the memories of our time spent with him – the hilarity, the stories, the seemingly limitless interests – will always be treasured.

Our thoughts and prayers are today with HM Queen Elizabeth II and her own family, for whom the sense of loss will be very hard to bear; and yet I know that the joy of reflecting upon his extraordinary life will be a source of immense comfort and pride.

Prince Philip was the longest serving royal consort in British history, having been by the Queen’s side for more than 70 years. He was just months away from celebrating his 100th birthday in June.

In a list of advice to young people published through his Duke of Edinburgh scheme last year, Prince Philip advised that we should “dress for ourselves and not others”.

What a style…!

His own taste leant towards the timeless, and relied heavily on British greats: Turnbull & Asser for shirts, ties, and pocket squares, and tailoring from his long-term collaborator John Kent, of Kent, Haste & Lachter. Throughout his decades in service, the Duke remained a meticulous dresser in every sense. “The Duke of Edinburgh had that understated, English gentleman style that is completely timeless, embodying all the divine traits of Savile Row,” says Manolo Blahnik. “Whether he was in a suit or in uniform, he looked impeccable.”

In fact, the Duke of Edinburgh’s style was always centred around a sense of appropriateness, and for more than 70 years he had to negotiate the hard compromise of dressing for both himself and for duty as the Queen’s consort. “When he stood very discreetly behind the Queen, he was always very formal, wearing beautiful shirts and ties that complemented his look,” says Edward Sexton, the Savile Row tailor who has made suits for everyone from John Lennon to Harry Styles. “He was there to complement what the Queen wore; it was about the colour of her dress and hat, so his hands were tied in certain respects, except when he was out at the weekend and could be very flamboyant.”

The initial details of Prince Philip’s funeral have been announced, including that it will take place on Saturday 17th April and be televised. The late royal “passed away peacefully” at Windsor Castle at the age of 99, the royal family confirmed yesterday.

Palace officials have confirmed that Philip will have a royal ceremonial funeral – rather than a grand State funeral – but that it will be a much more intimate affair than was originally planned; partly due to his personal wishes for it to be simple, but also due to Covid health and safety restrictions. Buckingham Palace has confirmed that they will stick to current pandemic guidelines, which only permits 30 guests. Members of the public have been asked not to attempt to attend.

Prince William has written a heartfelt tribute to Prince Philip, who died peacefully at Windsor Castle on Friday. He was 99 years old.

He described his “grandpa” as an “extraordinary man”, and praised his “infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour”.
The Duke of Cambridge shared a message via the official Kensington Royal social media accounts, accompanied by a sweet photograph of Prince Philip with William’s eldest child, Prince George.

“I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days,” he wrote. “I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her. I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”

My heart goes out to Her Majesty the Queen who lost yesterday the love of her life after almost 74 years together.

What are the special traits of an Italian Grandee, or a European King, or a French seigneur, or a contemporary ruler of a country, or a super talented male actor like Paul Newman or Mr Gatsby… (!) see Mr Leonardo Di Caprio…

How women think about real men are supposed to be..? And how genuine men feel like behaving with a woman they really want…?

The main characteristic of a Gentleman is that he knows how to act in a given way towards all. And when we say all we mean everyone. “(Women, subordinates, children, weak, waiters). His attitude towards women is something which makes the Gentleman distinct from the crowd. When he goes out with a lady, she never pays . No way ! If the man has no money, he pretends headache and he does not come with her.

A real gentleman does not proclaims or leaving innuendoes about the relationship he has with ladies. He never refers to erotic achievements , outstanding performance or enforcement toys.

A gentleman does not ask a lady where they should go , he picks her up from her house

to go where he judges best,  and returns her  ALWAYS in her house.

He never touches a woman other than a simple handshake . Excluding his daughter , his wife and his mistress.

He never hits a lady except sex , and there he needs the consent of her.

He never ever flirts any woman , if accompanies another.

He never rapes someone neither physically nor psychologically.

He knows how to dress according to the occasion . The sandal , the white sock ( except sporting wrapping ) , the shorts off the beach , should be banned.

He assumes the responsibilities of the decisions, actions and the arbitrary power.

A gentleman does not need to insult , provided one ironic phrase put others in place.

He is not fanatic for anything ( Football, religion , parties) and is not a fanatic because he thinks and knows very well, that everything in life has its weaknesses.

He never loses his humor.

Everyone’s favorite solider will be spending the day flying in a Spitfire to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Prince Henry of Wales, (Henry Charles Albert David) born 15 September 1984, known as Prince Harry, is the younger son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. His paternal grandparents are Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. At the time of his birth, he was third in the line of succession to succeed his grandmother. He is currently fifth in line after his nephew George and niece Charlotte.

Harry was born at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, on 15 September 1984 at 4.20 pm. He weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces (3.12 kg) . He was baptised on 21 December 1984 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.

His godparents were the Duke of York (his paternal uncle), Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones (his paternal cousin once removed), Lady Celia Vestey (née Knight), Carolyn Bartholomew (née Pride), Bryan Organand Gerald Ward (former officer in the Household Cavalry).

Diana wanted Harry and his older brother William to have a broader range of experiences than previous royal children and took them to venues that ranged fromDisney World and McDonald’s to AIDS clinics and shelters for the homeless.

Harry began to accompany his parents on official visits at an early age; his first overseas royal tour was with his parents to Italy in 1985.

The decision to place Harry at Eton went against the Windsor family tradition of sending children to Gordonstoun (Harry’s grandfather, father, two uncles, and two cousins all attended); it did make Harry follow in the Spencer family footsteps, as both Diana’s father and brother had attended Eton.

In June 2003, Harry completed his education at Eton with two A-Levels (achieving a grade B in art and D in geography) having decided to drop history of art after AS level. He excelled in sports, particularly polo and rugby union. Passing two A-levels, Harry was eligible to apply for an officer commission in the British Army.

After school, Harry took a gap year, during which he spent time in Australia, working (as his father had done in his youth) on a cattle station and participating in the Young England vs Young Australia Polo Test Match. He also travelled to Lesotho, where he worked with orphaned children and produced the documentary film The Forgotten Kingdom.

After an education at schools in the United Kingdom and spending parts of his gap year in Australia and Lesotho, Harry chose a military career, undergoing officer training at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

He was commissioned as a Cornet into the Blues and Royals of the Household Cavalry Regiment, serving temporarily with his brother, and completed his training as a troop leader. He left the army in June 2015.

Harry enjoys playing many sporting activities, playing competitive polo, skiing, and motocross. Prince Harry is a supporter of Arsenal Football Club. Harry is also a keen Rugby Union fan, and supported England’s bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The 69th Annual Tony Awards were held on June 7, 2015, to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2014–15 season. The ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and broadcast live by CBS. Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming hosted this year’s ceremony.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Fun Home each won five Tonys in the play and musical categories, respectively.

Each year, Bill Gates picks a handful of books that he enjoyed reading, reviews them, and suggests you do the same. This year, the philanthropist tried to stay away from financial tomes and historical narratives (last year’s list includedStress Test by Timothy Geithner and Doris Kearns Goodwin’s examination of presidential power) in favor of lighter fare.

VF.com and Gates Notes, the Microsoft co-founder’s blog, teamed up to exclusively debut this year’s list. While Gates may have opted for more seasonal reading material this time around, rest assured that this year’s books are still engaging.

“Last year, there was only one book on my summer reading list that you could reasonably call a beach read,” Gates writes. “This year I tried to pick a few more things that are on the lighter side. Each of these books made me think or laugh or, in some cases, do both. I hope you find something to your liking here.”

Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things that Happened, by Allie Brosh

“The book, based on Brosh’s wildly popular Web site, consists of brief vignettes and comic drawings about her young life,” Gates writes. “You will rip through it in three hours, tops. But you’ll wish it went on longer, because it’s funny and smart as hell.”

The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True, by Richard Dawkins

“Dawkins, an evolutionary biologist at Oxford, has a gift for making science enjoyable,” Gates writes. “Dawkins’s antagonistic (and, to me, overzealous) view of religion has earned him a lot of angry critics, but I consider him to be one of the great scientific writer/explainers of all time.”

What If?, by Randall Munroe

“People write Munroe with questions that range over all fields of science: physics, chemistry, biology,” writes Gates. “Questions like, ‘From what height would you need to drop a steak for it to be cooked when it hit the ground?’ (The answer, it turns out, is ‘high enough that it would disintegrate before it hit the ground.’) Munroe’s explanations are funny, but the science underpinning his answers is very accurate.”

“I enjoyed [this book] so much that it was one of a handful of books I recommended to everyone at TED this year,” Gates writes. “It was first published in 1954, but aside from a few anachronistic examples (it has been a long time since bread cost 5 cents a loaf in the United States), it doesn’t feel dated.”

Should We Eat Meat?, by Vaclav Smil

“Smil takes his usual clear-eyed view of the whole landscape, from meat’s role in human evolution to hard questions about animal cruelty,” Gates writes. “While it would be great if people wanted to eat less meat, I don’t think we can expect large numbers of people to make drastic reductions. I’m betting on innovation, including higher agricultural productivity and the development of meat substitutes, to help the world meet its need for meat.”

On Immunity, by Eula Biss

“When I stumbled across this book on the Internet, I thought it might be a worthwhile read,” Gates writes. “I had no idea what a pleasure reading it would be. Biss, an essayist and university lecturer, examines what lies behind people’s fears of vaccinating their children.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge showed their thanks to fans eagerly awaiting the new royal baby by sending breakfast to those camped outside St Mary’s Hospital where Kate Middleton will give birth.

Fans have been lined up and camping out around the hospital awaiting the birth of William and Kate’s second child. The royals sent members from their staff to hand-deliver cups of coffee, boxes of croissants and Danish pastries—all of which were interestingly wrapped in pink ribbons, the Daily Mail reports. The breakfast was provided from a local coffee shop—but does the pink ribbon hint that we can expect a royal baby girl this time around? Only time will tell…

Kensington Palace said: “The Duke and Duchess were aware that they had been out there for a long time and just wanted to do something for them.”

The boxes of pastries were reportedly wrapped in a pink ribbon, prompting speculation that Kate and William were hinting at the gender of their unborn child.

But the Daily Telegraph poured cold water on the idea, quoting a source who said the patisserie “just happens to use pink ribbon”.

Either way the royal fans camping outside St Mary’s Hospital appreciated the gesture. “I was still asleep. It’s lovely they’ve thought of us,” said 79-year-old Terry Hutt, who has spent eight nights sleeping on a bench in a custom-made Union Jack suit.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child will be delivered by royal gynaecologists Guy Thorpe-Beeston and Alan Farthing. The two men helped deliver Prince George, who reportedly arrived three days late in July 2013.

Pat O’Brien, a spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, told the Telegraph that it was “down to the individual consultant” as to when it is appropriate to induce labour. “Because it’s such a safe procedure, particularly with women who have given birth before, they tend to be pretty relaxed about inducing any time after the due date if the mother is getting fed up,” he said.

O’Brien added that doctors tend not to leave it more than two weeks after the due date and, if it is a big baby, it is sometimes better to induce before it gets any bigger.

“The mother will normally have a scan on or around the due date to make sure the baby is fine and it’s safe to press on a bit longer,” he said.

As the royal baby watch continues, the Daily Mail reports that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will announce the birth of their second child on Twitter. This marks the start of a new royal birth tradition, Prince George’s little brother or sister will be announced first on Twitter with a hashtag.

The news will also be announced on the traditional easel behind the gates of Buckingham Palace, just like Prince George and Prince William’s royal delivery announcements—but not until after the tweet is sent. The announcement on Twitter will include all the important details, including whether it’s a boy or a girl.

Alice is currently the bookies’ favourite name for the new baby, followed by Charlotte and Elizabeth, with seven out of the top ten predictions going to female names.

Phillip has overtaken Henry as the third favourite boy’s name, with James and Arthur in first and second place, according to Daily Telegraph.

Police have been making final security checks outside the Royal hospital, with parking restrictions in place from 15 to 30 April for an undisclosed “special event”.

Media outlets have agreed to wait until after Kate has been admitted before they begin reporting from the scene. TV crews and photographers swarmed the pavement outside for weeks before the birth of Prince George, a commotion the hospital was keen to avoid a second time around.
